Aluminum doors and windows ordered direct from Chinese factories can be well made and far cheaper than local quotes. But once the container lands, there's no local dealer to call. These are the checks we run with clients before production.
1. Shop drawings with rough-opening deductions
Factories build to the exact unit size in the order. Approve drawings that show both the unit size and the rough opening, plus sub-frame and sill drainage details.
2. Safety glass marks
Every tempered or laminated pane in a hazardous location needs a permanent etched mark showing compliance with ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC 16 CFR 1201.
3. Energy performance for zone 4A
The 2021 IECC prescriptive U-factor for windows here is 0.30, and ENERGY STAR uses 0.27 for Maryland. Ask for NFRC labels or documented values before paying the deposit.
4. Thermal breaks
Specify a polyamide thermal break and ask for a profile section drawing. Non-thermally-broken aluminum sweats in our winters.
5. Named hardware and a spares kit
Get the brand of the locks and rollers in writing. Order spare rollers, gaskets, handles and keepers in the same shipment.
6. Crating and inspection on arrival
Glazed units should ship upright in braced wooden crates. Open and photograph everything before signing for delivery.
7. Installation details in English
Confirm sill pan, flashing and anchoring details work with the frame, and plan crew and equipment for the panel weights.
