Sliding patio doors

The standard sliding patio door is still the most common door we work on. We install new ones and fix the ones that fight you every morning.

How it works

One panel is fixed and the other slides on rollers along a sill track. Adjustment screws at the bottom of the sliding panel raise or lower the rollers so it runs clear of the track.

Most problems come from grit in the track or worn rollers. Replacing rollers and cleaning or repairing the track brings most doors back to smooth operation.

For replacement, we match the door to the opening and the house: vinyl for value, fiberglass for stability, wood-clad for interior warmth, aluminum for slim frames.

What we check on every install

  1. Sill panEvery new exterior door gets a sill pan under it. Most leaks start where there isn't one.
  2. Level sillA sill that isn't level makes the panel drift and the lock miss the keeper.
  3. Roller adjustmentSet so the panel glides without rubbing and sits parallel to the jamb.
  4. Lock and keeperAligned so the lock engages without lifting or pushing the panel.
  5. Screen doorAdjusted to run freely on its own track.

Questions we hear

Repair or replace?

If the frame is sound and the glass isn't fogged, new rollers and track work usually cost far less than a new door.

Can you replace just the glass?

Yes. Fogged sealed units can be replaced in most sliding doors.

Why is my slider drafty?

Worn weatherstrip, a panel out of adjustment, or a sill that isn't sealing. We check all three.
