S-350 Post-construction cleanup

Cleaning up after a remodel, in two stages.

We clean up at the end of every workday. When the project is finished, construction dust still needs a professional final clean with HEPA equipment, by a company insured to work around your brand-new finishes.

Short answer

A remodel needs two kinds of cleaning. During the project, DDA Construction cleans up at the end of every workday: debris is removed, the work area is swept and vacuumed, and tools and materials are put away. When the project is finished, the fine construction dust left in the house should be removed by a professional post-construction cleaning company that uses true HEPA vacuums and air filtration and carries liability insurance to protect the new finishes.

Every day, before we leave

A remodel is lived around, not just worked on. At the end of each workday our crew cleans up the areas we worked in, so the house stays usable while the project goes on:

  • Debris, offcuts and packaging are bagged and taken out of the living areas.
  • The work area is swept and vacuumed.
  • Tools and materials are put away and walkways are left clear.
  • Floor protection and dust barriers are checked and fixed where they have moved.

This keeps the site safe and tidy day to day. It is not the same as a final clean, and it is not meant to be.

Why a remodel needs a professional final clean

Cutting, sanding drywall and removing old materials make very fine dust. Much of it stays in the air during the work and keeps settling for days afterward, on light fixtures and vents, on the tops of door and window frames, in window and sliding door tracks, on baseboards and inside the HVAC system. A household vacuum without a sealed HEPA system can blow the finest particles straight back into the room.

For the doors and windows we install, this matters in a specific way: grit left in sliding door tracks and lift-and-slide sills grinds into rollers and seals. Weep holes blocked with construction debris stop draining. A proper final clean protects the work you just paid for.

What to look for in a post-construction cleaning company

Ask forWhy it matters
True HEPA vacuums and air filtrationThe EPA describes a HEPA filter as able to remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns. Ask for the equipment make and model, not only the word "HEPA".
Liability insuranceNew paint, floors, glass and hardware are easy to scratch or stain. If something is damaged, an insured company can make it right. Ask for a certificate of insurance before work starts.
A written scopeRoom by room, top to bottom, including inside cabinets, fixtures, vents, windows, tracks and sills.
Products safe for new finishesFresh paint, sealed wood, new glass coatings and powder-coated frames need gentle products and soft tools.
Timing after the last tradeSchedule the clean after every trade has finished and before furniture moves back in.

After the clean, replace your HVAC filter. Construction dust loads it quickly.

How to find a post-construction cleaner near you

Search for "post-construction cleaning" plus your town, and shortlist companies that list it as a separate service rather than an add-on to regular house cleaning. Then compare them on the points that affect the result:

  1. Equipment. Ask which HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers they bring. Established local services publish this; for example, some Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia companies describe using sealed HEPA equipment and air filtration for post-construction cleaning, which is the kind of detail worth comparing between quotes.
  2. Insurance. Ask for a certificate of insurance before the visit.
  3. Scope. Get a written, room-by-room list that includes vents, fixtures, frame tops, tracks and sills.
  4. Experience with new finishes. Ask how they clean fresh paint, new floors, glass and hardware.
  5. Reviews. Look for reviews that mention post-construction or renovation cleaning specifically.

Older homes and lead-safe cleanup

In homes built before 1978, the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires the renovation firm to use lead-safe work practices when paint is disturbed, including specific cleanup steps before the job is considered finished. That work belongs to the renovator. A post-construction cleaning company comes after it as the final detail clean, not as a replacement for it.

Questions

Does DDA Construction clean up during the project?

Yes. The crew cleans up at the end of every workday: debris is removed, the work area is swept and vacuumed, and tools and materials are put away.

Why do I still need a cleaning company at the end?

Fine construction dust keeps settling for days on fixtures, frames, tracks, vents and floors. Removing it properly takes HEPA equipment and a full top-to-bottom clean, which is a different job from daily site cleanup.

What does HEPA mean?

HEPA is a filter standard. The EPA describes a HEPA filter as able to remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns.

Why should the cleaning company be insured?

A post-construction clean happens around brand-new paint, floors, glass and hardware. If something is scratched or damaged, insurance protects you and the new work.

How do I choose a post-construction cleaning company?

Look for a company that offers post-construction cleaning as its own service, uses true HEPA vacuums and air filtration, carries liability insurance, gives a written room-by-room scope and has reviews for renovation cleanups.

When should I schedule the final clean?

After every trade has finished and before furniture and rugs go back in. Change the HVAC filter afterwards.
